‘An exciting mix of engineering and production’

Johan Meuzelaar (32) is lead stress engineer.

“I first came into contact with Fokker Aerostructures while I was graduating in aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology. I always found it an attractive company, because of the combination of design and production of aircraft structures. That means you can see the tangible results after months of drawing, calculation and production. As lead stress engineer, I’m responsible in my group for the strength calculations of aircraft components. We design new structures for aerospace applications in a multidisciplinary team.

Together with the production team we decide what’s technically feasible and how we can achieve the best result: the lowest possible weight and the lowest possible costs. The lines of communication are short: new ideas are quickly tested and put into practice. Unexpected things often happen during my working day. If urgent problems come up in the production department – here or at another location – we quickly have to find a solution. That means my job demands a lot of flexibility. Being able to set priorities and work under pressure are important requirements. The mix of design and production is exciting. Solving the puzzle together, that’s the kick. And of course the final result, a high-quality, airworthy product, is the icing on the cake.”
